ARTstor Travel Awards 2011

Deadline for entries: March 15, 2011;

ARTstor is providing five travel awards in the amount of $1,500 each (to be used by December 31, 2012) to help support the educational and scholarly activities—such as flying to a conference—of graduate students, scholars, curators, educators, and librarians in any field.

To be considered for an award, applicants must create and submit an ARTstor image group (or a series of image groups) and a single accompanying essay that creatively and compellingly demonstrates why the image group(s) is useful for teaching, research, or scholarship. These submissions will help us better understand the uses that scholars and teachers are making of the ARTstor Digital Library's content and tools and will provide insight into how we can better serve the educational community. The five winning submissions will be determined by ARTstor staff. Please note that this award is not intended to sponsor new photography for the ARTstor Digital Library.

Applicants must create one or more image groups with a maximum of 100 images exclusively from the ARTstor Digital Library and save their image group(s) in their registered user account.

Applicants must submit a single essay in English (no longer than 500 words) via email to travelawards@artstor.orgwith the subject line "ARTstor Travel Award 2010-[applicant's surname]" explaining why this image group(s) is exceptionally useful for teaching, research, or scholarship in his/her area of specialization in the arts, architecture, humanities, or sciences. Each applicant may submit only one essay.

Access to Free Knowledge Under Fire

If you were planning on visiting Wikipedia today (Jan. 18) you'll find a temporary black-out.

Why? - Wikipedia and several other sites, including Google, are protesting against SOPA and PIPA, which represent two bills in the U.S. House & Senate. SOPA, "Stop Online Piracy Act," and PIPA, "Protect Intellectual Property Act." These bills aim to "stop copyright infringement committed by foreign web sites, but, in our [Wikipedia's] opinion, they do so in a way that actually infringes free expression while harming the Internet." Another bill, not mentioned by Wikipedia, but also of detrimental effect on research and scholarship is the The Research Works Act (HR 3699), co-sponsored by Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY). "This bill would would bar the federal government from mandating that the public have free access to the research it funds... It is the latest effort by publishers to push Congress to outlaw public access policies since 2008, when the National Institutes of Health adopted a requirement that researchers, as a condition of receiving federal funding, must deposit their final research papers in a government archive to be made publicly available within a year of publication." UConn joins HathiTrust Digital Library

UConn has become one of the first New England research universities to join the 50 or so collaborative partners in the HathiTrust Digital Library, which aims to create a digital library of published scholarship. Other institutions participating in this effort include Princeton, Yale, Columbia, and Duke. HathiTrust allows full-text searches of digitized books and materials, including those from the Google Books Library Project and Internet Archive.

Benton Exhibit of Musical Prints: 1568-1949

The Benton will be exhibiting musical prints between August 30-October 16, 2011.

These sixty-four prints will depict composers, performers, and major patrons in European music during the mid 16th through mid 20th century. Amongst the prints displayed will be several of Franz Liszt, Gioachino Rossini, as well as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

New Digital Audio Resource: Stradivari Quartet Recordings

University of Iowa has just launched a free digital streaming archive of recordings made by the Stradivari Quartet. The quartet was formed in 1960 at the School of Music at the University of Iowa and performed until 1996. Recordings in this collection included are mostly from on campus concerts and include the American premier of Milo Cipra's Quartet no. 5 (April 20, 1983), the first recording of Robert Stewart's Quartet no. 5 (April 20, 1988), and the world premiere of Linda Riddle Williams' Arcadia Quartet (October 17, 1990).

IPA Source is one of the most comprehensive online databases of International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions and literal translations of opera arias and art song texts.

You can search over 5470 texts, including 914 aria texts.

Search easily by composer, poet, or title of the song. You can also choose to only search arias or Latin texts. You can also print, save, or email the transcriptions.

Other resources on IPA Source include full-text libretti, diction assistance, and pronunciation recordings.

IPA Source uses the Langenscheidts Euro-Set with English, French, Italian, Spanish, and German.

Writing History in the Digital Age

Trinity College (Hartford) Professor Jack Dougherty and Senior Research Fellow (Roehampton University) Kristen Nawrotzki are the editors of Writing History in the Digital Age. Web-book edition, Hartford, CT: Trinity College, Spring 2011.

In this web-book, they ask several questions of historians: "How is the web changing our writing? In what ways has the digital revolution transformed how we conceptualize, author, and communicate our work, and learn about the scholarship of our peers? What aspects of the craft of historical writing have not changed? And what does all of this tell us about the current state of our field, and its relationship to broader trends in the humanities?" National Jazz Museum in Harlem Acquires Historic Collection

William Savory (jazz musician, recording technician) found a way to record some of the greatest jazz performances during the mid-1930s -1940s. What makes his recordings unique is that he figured out a way to record performances that ran longer than 3 minutes, which was the standard recording time during that period. His record collection contains over a thousand discs and was recently donated to the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. Performances on these discs include Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophonist), Billie Holiday, The Count Basie Orchestra(at the 1938 Carnival of Swing in NY), Lester Young, Herschel Evans, Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson (on harpsichord instead of his usual piano!) and many more.

If you'd like to listen to any of the recordings in their entirety, you might have to wait a while. Copyright law will not permit the museum to make these recordings immediately available to the public. Many of these recordings may be orphan works, which makes it even more problematic in tracking down the original copyright holders. For the full story, click here.

"From the Fire" created in honor of the Triangle's 100th Anniversary

On March 24, 2011, NPR aired a story about a new work created by composer, Elizabeth Swados, writer/director, Cecilia Rubino, poet, Paula Finn, and designer, Bonnie Roche-Bronfman. The dramatic oratorio, From the Fire, was written in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. It will be performed two blocks from the fire at the historic Judson Memorial Church on Washington Square during the week of Triangle's 100th Anniversary, March 23rd through March 27th, 2011.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, the University Libraries’ Diversity Advisory Team is sponsoring a program with Peggy Seeger, a member of America’s foremost folk music families.

Please join us on March 21, 2011 at 11:15 am - 1:30 pm in J. Louis von der Mehden Recital Hall for an interactive performance-workshop with Peggy Seeger, entitled: “A Feminist View of the Image of Women in Anglo-American Traditional Songs.”

This workshop will explore the images and roles of women in traditional Anglo-American songs dating from the 17th century onward. Ms. Seeger will delight us with a mix of singing and conversation and will welcome questions from the audience during and after this event.

The workshop is free and open to everyone. We encourage you to come for all or part of the program as your schedules allow. The event will be followed by a reception.

I've just returned from the most recent Music Library Association Conference (Philadelphia, PA) and have several things to share with you about the M&DA Library and our streaming audio resources.

If you haven't yet noticed, the M&DA Library recently redesigned its first level learning space.
What does this include?
- Two large study tables by the reference stacks
- Three serpentine carrels for individual study (also house audio/visual equip)
- Comfy area with a couch and two soft chairs

Please stop by and take a look at our redesigned space. We hope that you enjoy these changes and updates to our library!

Resource Updates:
Music Online will be offering streaming audio of popular music from the past 60 years or so.
Another feature, which isn't completely new, but you may not be aware of, are the playlists created by music editors and patrons. You can also create your own playlists to share or keep private.

Philadelphia is home to many things: murals, cheese steaks, and the Mummers! If you've never seen or heard the Mummers, I've included a video filmed at the opening reception of the MLA meeting.

Milton Babbitt Documentary

You may have heard that Milton Babbitt passed away on Jan. 29, 2011. The avant-garde composer was best known for his pioneer work with synthesized sounds and electronic music compositions. NPR has posted a premiere of a Babbitt documentary begun by Robert Hilferty and finished by composer and former Babbitt student Laura Karpman.

Anthony Tommasini, NY Times music critic, has selected his top 10 classical music composers in history (not including living composers). Although he uses the term "classical" in the title, his list includes pre- and post- what most musicians and scholars consider as "classical" music, but no one is going to argue with Mr. Tommasini. Its the 21st century, but not surprisingly his list contains 0 women composers--now hopefully that will get noticed.

M&DAL adds new Drama Database

We have added Twentieth Century North American Drama to our list of available resources.

This database currently features 1,530 plays by 223 playwrights. Coverage is from the late 1800s to the present, including contemporary key figures, preeminent playwrights of the past century, and Pulitzer prize winners from every decade of the century. Many of the works are rare, hard-to-find, out of print, or unpublished. Each play is extensively and deeply indexed, allowing both keyword and multi-fielded searching. The plays are accompanied by reference materials, significant ancillary information, a rich performance database, and images.

DRAM digitizes CRI LPs

DRAM is currently working on digitizing approximately 4o0 LPs issued by CRI (Composers Recordings). To date, these recordings have been unavailable in any format other than LP.

Newly Available: Digital Collections from the Morgan Library & Museum

"The Morgan Library & Museum has made digital versions of more than forty celebrated music manuscripts from its extraordinary permanent collection available on its Web site for the first time. Music Manuscripts Online, at www.themorgan.org/music , will include such important works as Beethoven's Violin and Piano Sonata, op. 96; Chopin's Polonaise, op. 53; Debussy's En sourdine; Haydn's Symphony No. 91; Mahler's Symphony No. 5; Mendelssohn's Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage; Mozart's Piano Concerto, K 537; and Schubert's Impromptus D 935.

Eventually as many as nine hundred manuscripts containing more than 42,000 pages will be added to the Morgan’s Web site. The Morgan’s collection of music manuscripts is considered one of the best in the world, and is consulted by scholars, performers, conductors, and collectors."

Lily Rabe is a young actor who has been making a name for herself mainly on the NY stage (Broadway, Public Theatre) and in MA (Gloucester Stage Company). Her father is playwright David Rabe, and her late mother was actress Jill Clayburgh. Rabe has appeared in productions including "All Good Things," "An Unmarried Woman," "The American Plan," and most recently in "The Merchant of Venice." Musical world loses "La Stupenda"

High-Tech Set Design for Wagner's Ring Cycle at the Met

This opera season will open at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC with Wagner's first installment of the Ring Cycle and will feature high-tech set design. The set and moving stage components were created by Robert Lepage, the Canadian stage, opera and Cirque du Soleil director noted for visual wizardry, and his creative team. The Rheingold cast will feature Bryn Terfel as Wotan and Stephanie Blythe as Fricka.

British Drama programs once thought to be lost...now found at the Library of Congress

An assortment of televised plays featuring postwar British stars, the likes of John Gielgud, Sean Connery, Dorothy Tutin, Susannah York, Peggy Ashcroft, Leonard Rossiter, Jane Asher, and more has been unearthed at the Library of Congress. These programs were broadcast between 1957 and 1970 and include recorded productions of Ibsen's The Wild Duck and Chekhov's The Seagull. This is a wonderful discovery for theatre historians and researchers! Click here for the full story.

In an update to this fascinating discovery, the Library of Congress has announced that they will in fact digitally preserve all of the programs found in this collection. Read more here.

Let me share with you some new information about the M&DA Library, as well as some of our popular resources.

We have 2 new features that will make your lives a little bit easier:

Free scanning and wireless printing (pay-per-use)! See staff for assistance.

We have a newly renovated seminar room on the second level.

To schedule a class or seminar in that room use the EMS scheduling system or contact the M&DA Library.

Our DVD collection is now cataloged according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system, which is how the books and scores are organized. This should make it easier for you to find a corresponding opera or musical work in both score and DVD format.

Many of our journals are available in electronic formats. If you'd like to find a specific journal title, please visit the eJournal Locator and search by title.

Music Index now has more full-text articles and journals available!

The full-text includes not only the article that you searched, but the entire contents of the publication, as well as other issues.

Art History Resource - Costume/Stage Ideas

If you are looking for a free resource that provides quality images of paintings, sculptures, and other works of art, visit: http://smarthistory.org. Although it is advertised as "a free and open, not-for-profit, art history textbook," it can be a useful resource for costume and stage design.

As of 1/4/11, it featured:
362 images of art works ranging from 400 C.E. through the present time (contributed by users through Flickr)
Descriptive passages about each time period, style, and some artists.
301 videos with discussion of specific art works.
Searchable by time period, style, artist, or theme.
